For approximately 100 years, these beautiful colored horses have been bred by the Gypsies or Romany folk. Like the Native Americans, records of breedings have been kept by word of mouth and through tales told. With a background including Shire, Clydesdale, Friesian and Dales Pony, these cold blooded draft type horses have been bred in the same way for generation after generation.

Since the Gypsy Hose is a draft horse, good conformation attributes should be the same as any good draft horse. The back should be short having a sloped shoulder and nice, rounded croup.

The head should be neither too big or too small. A Roman nose is a tradition as well as a well place neck of appropriate length. There should be a kind and gentle eye. The eyes may be blue or contain blue but this is a personal preference in Romany breeders.

The legs should have flat, hard, clean joints and support the massive body well. Hind legs should have some angle and the pasterns should be of appropriate length to allow proper flexion and spring in movement. The should be some set in the hind legs meaning the sides of the legs can be seen somewhat from behind.

Hair is plentiful and more is always better. Silky feathering on the legs starts at the knee and should cover the front of the hoof. Mane and tail should be heavy and luxurious.

Color is not as important as conformation although it should be mentioned. Gypsy Horses come in the most beautiful tobiano patterns and solid colors. The Romany people love the more colorful ones and breed for that.

Gypsy Horses have a wonderful temperament and quickly become a part of the family. They are sweet, gentle and intelligent. They walk into your barn and into your heart and add their charm to your life.  We invite you to let one of these beautiful horses into your life and watch the magic they weave.
